What is single cylinder vs. double cylinder?

Single Cylinder:   Key operates the lock from outside; turn piece operates the lock from inside.

Double Cylinder:  The lock operates by key from either side; no turn knob.  Frequently used for security when door has glass inset.  Double-cylinder locks on residences and any door in any structure which is used for egress are a safety hazard in times of emergency, and their use is not recommended.  Installation should be in accordance with existing codes only.

What does Grade 1, 2, or 3 mean?

Industry grades do reflect quality and durability.

In cycle tests, for example, a Grade 2 lock need only function for 400,000 cycles,
while a Grade 1 lock must meet at least 800,000 cycles.
Grade 3 locks must complete at least 200,000 cycles.

A grade 1 key in knob must hold up to 300 lb-in and a lever lock must withstand 450 lb-in.
A grade 2 key in knob, must hold up to 150 lb-in and a lever must hold up to 225 lb-in.
A grade 3 requires a key-in-knob to withstand at least 120 lb-in and a lever lock must withstand at least 180 lb-in.

Grade 3 is suitable for residential use.
Grade 2 is suitable for residential and light commercial use.
Grade 1 is suitable for heavy commercial use.

Grade 2 certainly seems to offer excellent security and durability for residential applications.
